KIDS' SAFETY TIPS  FROM A TO Z!

Suicidal Behavior

The wish to commit suicide is often the result of a deep depression linked to a feeling of lasting despair. It is necessary to detect any warning signs a person may exhibit as the person may quickly become “at-risk” to him or herself and the school community.

Did you Know?
According to the National Hospital Ambulatory Care Survey 2005, the number of emergency department visits for self-inflicted injury was 420,000.

What to Tell Children (excerpt)
Alert the school staff if you notice any suspicious, unusual, and/or dangerous behavior in a classmate (threats, assault, harassment, mental confusion, agitation, possession of a firearm, etc.).
Do not consider suicide as a challenge to show off to classmates or use it as a threat to settle a conflict with parents.
Never leave someone who expresses the desire to kill himself alone.
